Groundwater Quality: Northern India

چکیده
F This is one of a series of information sheets prepared for each country in which WaterAid works. The sheets aim to identify inorganic constituents of significant risk to health that may occur in groundwater in the country in question. The purpose of the sheets is to provide guidance to WaterAid Country Office staff on targeting efforts on water-quality testing and to encourage further thinking in the organisation on waterquality issues.

Development of an Index of Aquifer Water Quality within GIS Environment
The changes in human population often correspond with change in land use, including expansion of urban areas, agriculture and increasing industrialization, which necessitate increasing the available amount of drinking water. As the surface water sources are under the pressure of pollution, it has become necessary to use groundwater at an increasing rate. Groundwater recharge can be abundant in ...
متن کاملDwindling groundwater resources in northern India, from satellite gravity observations
[1] Northern India and its surroundings, home to roughly 600 million people, is probably the most heavily irrigated region in the world. Temporal changes in Earth’s gravity field in this region as recorded by the GRACE satellite mission, reveal a steady, large-scale mass loss that we attribute to excessive extraction of groundwater. Combining the GRACE data with hydrological models to remove na...
متن کاملEvaluation of the impact of landfill leachate on groundwater quality in Kolkata, India
The present study is aimed at characterizing the landfill leachate as well as its impact on the surrounding groundwater in Kolkata, India. Landfill leachate has been seasonally characterized from 2012-2014, indicating the landfill site in methanogenic phase with high contamination of organics, nutrients, salts, and heavy metals. Sixty groundwater samples have been analyzed for twenty two physic...
متن کاملImpact of copper mines and smelter on groundwater quality (Case Study: Rajasthan State in India)
Rajasthan is one of the main mineral potential state of India. During the last 30 years it has witnessed enormous expansion of mining industries, but mining of most of the minor minerals coupled with changing climate has posed serious problems to the environmental fabric in the state, apart from base metal beneficiation plants. Groundwater is also being polluted day-by-day by effluents generate...
